How to Play Candy Crush Soda Saga – What’s the Same
There are many similarities in how to play Candy Crush Soda Saga which you will notice right away. The core mechanics are like any other match-3 swipe game you have played in the past including Candy Crush Saga. This means that when you switch or match three or more pieces of the same color together they burst, give you points, and are removed from the board. Once removed the other pieces fall into place, and you can make your next match from there.
The six different colors from the original game are still involved, but the dark blue lollipop top is no longer the main blue candy. The special candies that you remember from the original game are also made using the same matches. So when you first start you will already know how to make a striped or wrapped candy, and color bombs. There are some major differences with these specials which we will go into later, but how you make them works the same.
Candy Crush Soda Saga is a level based game which requires you to follow a map, and move through episodes and worlds. It has a scoring scale that awards up to three stars based on how many points you get, and you have to reach at least a one star score to advance. You also have to complete the set goals for the level which are all different based on which type of level you are playing.
There is in-game currency called gold bars which you can use to buy extra moves or boosters. You start out with some of these bars for free, but once they run out you have to buy them for real money. This is a common for just about every type of game, so you should already be familiar with it. When you first are learning how to play Candy Crush Soda Saga these are the main things you will notice as being familiar.

How to Play Candy Crush Soda Saga – What’s New
Now that you feel comfortable in your quest to learn how to play Candy Crush Soda Saga we can talk about why this game is so unique. The first thing to take note of is that there are now seven colors of candy in the game which can make some levels very difficult. The dark blue candy from the first game takes a back seat to the new light blue candy, so when you see the old blue lollipop top you can guess that it will be a harder than average level.
Part of the reason we like it so much is that it takes the basic match-3 mechanics to places we’ve never been before. In the very first level we are introduced to soda which literally turns things upside down. The level types in Candy Crush Soda are all new, but the soda and bubble levels stand out from any game that we have played before.
When there is soda on the board the pieces start behaving in a different way. Pieces above the soda line or on the dry part of the board continue to fall like a normal match-3, but candies that are submerged in soda float up. This means you can have pieces moving in two directions, and really have to think of where things will end up. There is so much that is interesting about the soda levels we suggest you read our guides on them if you really want to understand how to play Candy Crush Soda Saga.
While soda isn’t on every board in the game that doesn’t mean that the pieces fall down on all the others. There are several levels where the pieces move in various ways including multiple directions, spirals, and just about everything in between. There are also honey and bubble levels that have scrolling boards with multiple rooms instead of the single board levels we are used to from most puzzle games. Up to this point all the swipe match-3 games we know of use single board levels, and Pet Rescue Saga and Diamond Digger Saga (which are collapse style match games) are the only games we’ve played with expanding board layouts. These levels add variety as you move along on the map, and add an extra dimensions to overall strategy.
All of the special candies from the original game are in the soda saga, but there are also two new ones. While the fish is not brand new that you can make them with matches is. Also there is no jelly in this game so the fish go after things like soda bottles, chocolate, ice, blockers, and honey. When learning how to play Candy Crush Soda Saga learning how to make a fish is so important that the match is featured on the loading screen. This is the first match in the shape of a square that we know of in a match-3 game, and fish get even better when you make combos with them.
The other new special candy is the coloring candy bomb. This special is created by matching 6 or more candies together, and it can do things that no other special candy has ever done in a Candy Crush game. Matching two coloring candies together is the coolest combo in the game, and even though this piece works in a similar way as a color bomb does, it really is a lot more powerful. The coloring candy is a little complicated at first so make sure to read our guide to understand all the details.
